Description

The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland was founded by John Stearne in 1654 and opened its doors to women in 1877, attracting a great many from Great Britain and the Continent who could not otherwise gain a license to practise.

Alphabetical list of physicians, 18th century to 1954, the collection is mainly obituaries, newscuttings, manuscript notes, filed in envelopes.

T.P.C. Kirkpatrick, distinguished medical historian, author of many books including, The Book of the Rotunda Hospital, 1913, began by listing Fellows of the College and later extended the search to all Irish doctors about whom he could find information.

MacClintock, Alfred Henry, 1822-1881, Licentiate, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, 1842. Master, Rotunda Hospital, Dublin, Lecturer in Obstetrics, Park Street School, Dublin, President, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Published Clinical Memoirs on the Diseases of Women, (1863).1 newscutting, 3 manuscript notes, 1 portrait.

Margaret Ó hOgartaigh has constructed a typescript list of women physicians to 1930 from Kirkpatrick. These include:

Kathleen Florence Lynn, MB (Royal University of Ireland), 1899. Physician, St Ultan's Infant Hospital, Dublin. 2 newscuttings [also a portrait].

Sophia Jex-Blake, c.1841-1912. Licentiate, Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, MD (Berne). Founded Edinburgh Hospital and Dispensary for Women and Children. Dean and lecturer in midwifery, Edinburgh School of Medicine for Women. 4 obituaries, 2 newscuttings, 2 manuscript notes, 4 portraits.
