Collection DescriptionCorrespondence, papers and photographs of the Stephen family in England and Ireland, 1794-1948, relating especially to Sir James Stephen (1789-1859), Colonial Under Secretary and Regius Professor of Modern History, Cambridge, to his son, Sir James Fitzjames Stephen (1829-1894), judge; and to Rosamund Stephen (died 1951), daughter of Sir James and founder of the Irish Guild of Witness.

Description

Rosamund Stephen correspondence, 1920-1951. Letters to her sister Kate from Belfast, 1923:
'At the very worst when the murders were going on all round them at the rate of two a day they organized a cake fair in this house'.
Also includes reference to higher education for girls and photographs of family members and eminent contemporaries.
The Record, copies of letters, diary entries, 1902-c.1947, the promotion of the Irish Guild of Witness, the Irish language;
Diary kept on 'The Passing of Home Rule, 25 February 1912-1921
'September 1914, as seen by a church worker in Belfast'; with cuttings from the Church of Ireland Gazetteer and a pamphlet on the 'Future of Ireland, 1918-1930'
'1916', a typescript account of the Rising, during which she and her family were in Dublin, took tea to the soldiers and drove hospital supplies.
References to the League of Women and Cumann na [mBan]; exclusion of Ireland from compulsory service in World War I with anecdotal references to people she visited, socially and as a missionary.
