Collection DescriptionThe Wiltshire Collection of 1,000 negatives and 300 prints spans a twenty-year period from 1951. The bulk of the images feature Dublin, providing a view of life in the capital during that period. They were taken by Elinor Wiltshire of the Green Studios in Dublin. Surrogate reference copies of the prints are available in the National Photographic Archive Reading Room. Detailed catalogue entries for the whole collection can be found on the Library's Online Catalogue for the collection and some of the entries are accompanied by scanned images [NLI].

This collection comprises black-and-white photographs by Elinor Vere OBrien (1918-2017), and audio and film material of Patrick Kavanagh by Elinor’s husband Reginald Wiltshire (d.1968). Elinor and Reginald Wiltshire owned The Green Studio Ltd., Dublin (1958-1968, St. Stephen's Green). Subjects include: travellers in Loughrea, Co. Galway and Buttevant, Co. Cork, 1954; Patrick Kavanagh (1904-1967) in his home town of Inishkeen, Co. Monaghan 1963 and lecturing in U.C.D. 1958; Kavanagh on the 50th anniversary of Bloomsday, June 16 1954, at the Martello Tower in Sandycove and other locations mentioned in Ulysses with filmmaker John Ryan (1925-1992), Anthony Cronin (1926-), Brian O' Nolan ( Flann O' Brien) (1911-1966), Michael Scott (1905-1989), Con Leventhal (1896-1979) and others. Other subjects include images of Dublin life and development (1953-1969): Kilmainham Jail 1953; pattern day in Rathfarnham, Co. Dublin, 1954; Moore Street Market 1964; demolitions at Charlotte Street 1964 and Lower Fitzwilliam Street 1965; Cumberland Street market 1969; Corpus Christi parade, Halston Street, 1969; Sandymount Strand 1969; and scenes along the banks of the Grand Canal. Events depicted include demolition of Nelson's Pillar March 9 1966 and the York Street evictions 1964. Also featured are many Dublin landmarks and street scenes such as The Five Lamps, Portland Row and O'Connell Street [NLI].
