Description

Files relating to the Rural Electrification Scheme in Ireland. Much of the material is basic requests for electrification of dwelling houses, often from TD's and Ministers and replies from the Electricity Supply Board. These contain letters from or about women requesting electrification of their dwelling houses. For example:

RE31-313 file [Ballingarry R A 202/203] letter from P.J. Dowling, Head of Sales Department, ESB, to John Fahey, TD, 26 October 1965: 'Further to my letter of the 1st October, I have now looked into the position regarding the extension of supply to Mr John McGarry, Miss Katie Egan and Miss Mary Mc Garry all of Garrynow, Ballingarry, Thurles. The above reside in the Board's Ballingarry Rural Area which is scheduled for re-canvass under the revised rural scheme in the near future. All unconnected householders will be contacted during the re-canvass and the best possible terms for supply will be quoted.'

The letters in these files are standard letters, indicating when electrification will take place and under what terms with occasionally a more detailed letter, for example:

Letter from the Honorary Secretary of Sligo County Federation Muintir na Tíre, Mary K. Bradley, 22 September 1967 to Mr Lyddy [RE40-42 Drumcliffe R A 202/40] relating to a young farmer in the Drumcliffe Guild who, living in an outlying area was having a problem with Electricity Supply Board charges.

There are c. 273 boxes in total relating to the Rural Electrification Scheme.
