Calendar of entries in the Papal Reigsters relating to Great Britain and Ireland. Papal Letters Volume XVI Alexander VI (1492-1503) Lateran Registers Part One: 1492-1498

Edited by: Anne P. Fuller

This Volume in English is a full and accurate calendar of the letters relating to Great Britain and Ireland to be found in the Lateran Registers of Alexander VI for the years 1492-98. This Volume contains, without exception, all common letters of the apostolic chancery and, as we should expect of such letters, they are entirely concerned with the routine operations of papal government of the church. This selection contains some letters of outstanding interest: the English letters include one for Grocyn if not another for Latimer, a foundation 'charter' of Jesus College, Cambridge, and a highly important re-script of justice in the protracted suit over probate jurisdiction between the sees of London and Canterbury; the Scottish a dispensation for Gavin Douglas, a provision concerning John Ireland and a solemn confirmation of privileges for the dean and chapter of Glasgow while of the Irish letters - always rich in biographical and topographical detail - may be singled out one containing a lost provincial statue of Tuam, a pair relating to the dilapidated state of the cathedral church of Ross, and - for sheer colour - the rehabilitation in favour of Cornelius O'Mullony, the delinquent bishop of Kilmacduagh.
